Larnaka Salt Lake is the second largest salt-lake across Cyprus. The Salt Lake has been declared a protected biotope in 1997. In fact, it is one of the most significant biotopes of across Europe. During the winter months, the Salt Lake overflows with water and becomes home to multiple migratory birds, amongst of which are the beautiful flamingos that are also the main crowd-attraction. Other birds that visit the Salt Lake during their migratory journey are gulls, wildfowl, terns and waders. The migratory birds feed on tiny brine shrimps called Artemia. When the migratory birds can no longer find shrimps to feed on they continue their migratory journey.
